Absorption and Exhaustion Explained
Absorption and exhaustion are two order-flow concepts that help explain why a move slows, stalls, or reverses.

Absorption happens when one side attacks but cannot move price much. Exhaustion happens when the active side runs out of force after an extended move.
What Is Absorption?
Absorption means aggressive orders are being met by enough opposite liquidity to stop price from moving as expected.
Examples:
- buyers hit resistance with strong volume, but price cannot close above it;
- sellers hit support with strong volume, but price refuses to break lower;
- delta is strongly one-sided, yet candle bodies shrink;
- repeated attempts into a level produce less progress.
Absorption is about effort failing to produce result.
What Is Exhaustion?
Exhaustion means the side driving the move has spent much of its force.
Examples:
- volume spikes late in an extended trend;
- price makes a new high or low with weaker delta;
- candles become smaller after a fast move;
- a breakout quickly loses follow-through;
- open interest stops supporting the move.
Exhaustion does not always create a reversal. Sometimes it creates a pause before continuation.
Absorption vs Exhaustion
| Concept | Main idea | Common clue |
|---|---|---|
| Absorption | Opposite side is actively taking the pressure | Big effort, small price progress |
| Exhaustion | Active side is running out of energy | New extension, weaker participation |
Both concepts require confirmation. Price must still show that the level is holding, reclaiming, or failing.
Using ZenAlgo
Heavy Delta is useful for spotting delta disagreement, order-block reactions, and value references on the chart. Ultimate can help add broader confirmation, while Delta helps inspect participation disagreement.
Read absorption and exhaustion together with support and resistance, VWAP, and market regimes.
Practical Checklist
- Where is the pressure happening?
- Is the level important?
- Is effort increasing while result decreases?
- Is delta agreeing or disagreeing with price?
- Is open interest adding or removing exposure?
- What confirmation would prove the reaction?

Absorption and exhaustion are interpretive. They can appear before continuation, not only reversal, especially in strong trends.
