VWAP Explained

VWAP stands for volume-weighted average price. It estimates the average price traded during a period, weighted by volume.

VWAP line acting as value reference through intraday price action

The short answer

VWAP is a value reference. Price above VWAP is generally above volume-weighted value for the period. Price below VWAP is generally below it.

Why VWAP Is Useful

A simple moving average treats every candle equally. VWAP gives more weight to prices where more volume traded.

That makes it useful for questions like:

  • Is price trading above or below today's accepted value?
  • Is price stretched away from value?
  • Is VWAP acting as support or resistance?
  • Did price reclaim or lose value?

Common VWAP Reads

Price behaviorCommon interpretation
Price above VWAPBuyers have control relative to the period's value
Price below VWAPSellers have control relative to the period's value
Price repeatedly rejects VWAPVWAP is acting as resistance or support
Price hugs VWAPMarket may be balanced or undecided
Price far from VWAPExtension risk increases

VWAP is not magic. It matters because many traders use it to judge value, execution quality, and mean reversion.

VWAP and Trend

In a strong trend, price may stay above or below VWAP for a long time. Fading every move away from VWAP is dangerous.

In a range, VWAP can behave more like a magnet. Price may rotate around it as the market searches for fair value.

This is why VWAP should be paired with market regime.

Using ZenAlgo

Levels keeps current and historical VWAP references on the chart. Ranger, Multiverse, and Golden Vein help traders read VWAP across different time horizons and value structures.

Avenger also uses Daily VWAP and value distance to help avoid chasing price too far from value.

Practical VWAP Checklist

  1. Which VWAP period am I using?
  2. Is price above, below, or rotating around VWAP?
  3. Is VWAP sloping or flat?
  4. Is price stretched away from VWAP?
  5. Is the market trending or ranging?
  6. Does volume confirm the move away from value?

Risk notice

VWAP can act as a useful value reference, but price can remain extended far longer than a trader expects. Do not use VWAP alone to fight a strong trend.
