What Is Volume Delta?

Volume delta compares estimated buying volume with estimated selling volume during a candle or period.

The short answer

Delta helps answer whether aggressive buying or aggressive selling appears to be stronger. It is most useful when compared with price behavior.

The Basic Idea

If buying pressure is stronger than selling pressure, delta is positive. If selling pressure is stronger than buying pressure, delta is negative.

In simple terms:

  • positive delta means buyers were more aggressive;
  • negative delta means sellers were more aggressive;
  • rising delta can confirm upward participation;
  • falling delta can confirm downward participation;
  • disagreement between price and delta can warn that a move is fragile.

Price and Delta Agreement

Agreement is the easy case.

PriceDeltaWhat it suggests
RisingPositive or risingBuyers are supporting the move
FallingNegative or fallingSellers are supporting the move

Agreement does not guarantee continuation. It simply means the internal pressure fits the visible candle direction.

Price and Delta Disagreement

Disagreement is often more interesting.

PriceDeltaPossible meaning
RisingWeak or negativeBuyers may be losing control, or sellers are absorbing
FallingWeak or positiveSellers may be losing control, or buyers are absorbing

This is where traders begin looking for exhaustion, absorption, or divergence.

Delta Is Often Estimated

Many charting platforms estimate buy and sell pressure from available trade or candle data. That means delta is a useful model, not a perfect view into every order.

Different exchanges, symbols, and data providers can show different readings.

Using ZenAlgo

Delta is built around the question of confirmation and disagreement. Heavy Delta also visualizes delta context directly on the price chart through symbols and table states.

Use delta to ask:

  • is participation confirming price?
  • is pressure fading near a key level?
  • is a candle direction hiding internal disagreement?
  • is a divergence forming?

What Delta Does Not Tell You

Delta does not tell you where your stop should be. It does not know your risk, timeframe, or invalidation point.

Delta can warn that something is changing internally, but price structure must still confirm the trading idea.

Risk notice

Delta readings are contextual and may be estimated. A strong delta candle can still fail if it appears in the wrong location or against stronger market structure.
